SUGAR HILL SISTERS by Bil Wright
Staged Reading to Benefit TACO
Lamb’s Players Theatre, Coronado—7:30 p.m.
January 21, 2013, Martin Luther King Jr. Day
The musical THE SUGAR HILL SISTERS is the story of Jeannette and Rena, two young African-American women growing up on Harlem’s Sugar Hill in a volatile household. As the story unfolds, there is opportunity to wonder about the power of forgiveness. The sisters perform as a singing duo at Stuart Rose’s Downtown Club, but cannot escape their alcoholic father’s rage. Jeannette escapes to the South to become a civil rights worker and Rena starts a relationship with a married Congressman. When Rena becomes very ill, she sends for her sister, hoping they can reconcile before it’s too late. THE SUGAR HILL SISTERS was accepted into and received a reading in the Developmental Reading Series of the 2012 New York Musical Theatre Festival.
